When you think of Athens, your mind might immediately leap to the ancient wonders of the Acropolis or the bustling streets of Plaka. But what if I told you that just a short drive from the city centre lies a slice of coastal paradise that feels worlds away from the urban hustle? Let Varkiza Beach whisk you away to the tranquil beauty of the Athens Riviera, a haven of relaxation and natural splendour.

A Beach for Everyone

Varkiza Beach, or "Yabanaki" as the locals often call it, is one of those rare places that caters to every kind of traveller. Whether you’re a sun worshipper, a water sports enthusiast, or simply someone looking for a peaceful spot to unwind, Varkiza has you covered. The beach is divided into two main sections: the organised part with sunbeds, umbrellas, and a lively beach bar, and the more tranquil, free section where you can lay your towel on the sand and soak up the sun without a care in the world.

The organised area is perfect for families and those who enjoy a bit of buzz. The beach bar serves up refreshing cocktails, Greek coffee, and light snacks, while the crystal-clear waters are ideal for swimming. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can try your hand at windsurfing or paddleboarding. The gentle waves here make it a great spot for beginners.

A Taste of Greek Summer

No visit to Varkiza would be complete without indulging in some local flavours. Just a stone’s throw from the beach, you’ll find a handful of traditional tavernas serving up fresh seafood, grilled octopus, and classic Greek dishes like moussaka and tzatziki. One of my personal favourites is a family-run taverna where the owner will often come out to greet you with a warm smile and a recommendation for the day’s catch. Pair your meal with a chilled glass of Assyrtiko wine, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a Greek summer afternoon.

How to Get to Varkiza Beach

Getting to Varkiza is easy, whether you’re driving or using public transport. If you’re coming from central Athens, hop on the tram from Syntagma Square and enjoy the scenic ride along the coast. The journey takes about 45 minutes, and the tram drops you right near the beach. If you’re driving, there’s ample parking available, though it can get busy during peak summer months.

One insider tip: arrive early if you want to snag a good spot, especially during weekends when locals flock here to escape the city heat. And don’t forget to bring cash. While some places accept cards, smaller tavernas and beach bars often prefer cash payments.

Beyond the Beach

While Varkiza is a destination in its own right, it’s also a great starting point for exploring the wider Athens Riviera. Just a short drive away, you’ll find other beautiful beaches like Glyfada and Vouliagmeni, each with its own unique vibe. If you’re up for a bit of history, consider taking a day trip to the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, where you can watch the sun set over the Aegean Sea in a blaze of golden hues.

Why Varkiza Stands Out

What makes Varkiza truly special is its ability to offer a quintessential Greek beach experience without the crowds you’d find on the islands. It’s a place where you can feel the pulse of local life, whether you’re chatting with fishermen as they bring in their catch or joining in a game of beach volleyball with friendly Athenians. It’s this blend of natural beauty, authentic charm, and accessibility that makes Varkiza a must-visit on any trip to Athens.

So, the next time you’re planning your Athens itinerary, don’t just stick to the ancient sites and bustling neighbourhoods. Take a detour to Varkiza Beach, and discover a side of Athens that’s as refreshing as the Aegean breeze. Trust me, you’ll leave with a sun-kissed glow and memories to last a lifetime.
